Between the Bluffs | Plein Air Festival

We are delighted to welcome artists and visitors to the 2026 plein air festival in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

From October 2–15, artists from across the region and beyond will paint on location throughout the Driftless area, capturing its landscapes, river views, and historic architecture through original works created directly from observation. All artwork must be dropped off on October 15 and prepared according to the guidelines, ready for exhibition.

The public is invited to experience the creative process throughout the event. On October 10, Artist Demonstrations will take place in a scenic park setting, where artists will share techniques and paint outdoors during the day.

On the morning of October 16, the Quick Paint Competition will be held at a local park, with participating artists completing a painting in just two hours.

The festival culminates that evening with the Opening Reception and Awards Night Show at 6 PM at Gallery 1802. Guests can view freshly completed paintings, meet the artists, and celebrate the creativity and energy of the event.

Sales continue on October 17 at Gallery 1802, offering collectors and visitors an additional opportunity to view and purchase original works created during the festival.

Whether you are a painter, collector, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of this region, this event offers a unique opportunity to experience art fresh off the easel and connect with artists working directly from nature.

We invite artists to be part of this event and experience the beauty of the Driftless region while painting alongside fellow artists in a vibrant and welcoming community.

BtB Judge

Each year, the Between the Bluffs Plein Air Festival invites respected plein air artists to serve as the events judges. The judges bring extensive experience in outdoor painting and plays an important role in recognizing excellence among participating artists.

The core judge evaluates the paintings created during the Main Event, awarding prizes based on artistic merit, composition, technique, and the artist’s ability to capture the character and atmosphere of the La Crosse region.

In addition, the 2nd judge reviews and evaluate the works produced during the Quick Paint competition, selecting award recipients from artists who create a finished painting within a limited time period.

By inviting accomplished plein air painters to serve as judges, the festival ensures that the artwork is evaluated by professionals who understand the unique challenges and traditions of plein air painting.

2026 Judges will be announced soon.
